One Letter From the Full 26-Letter Alphabet

An A-Z draw leaves no letter out, so Q, X and Z come up exactly as often as E, T and A.

Each draw picks from all 26 letters of the modern English alphabet. The chance of any one letter is 1 in 26, about 3.85%, and that chance resets on every draw. The tool does not remember the last letter, so a K straight after a K is just as likely as any other pair.

That is different from letters in real writing. In English text, E makes up about 12.7% of all letters and Z about 0.07%. An A-Z generator ignores word frequency on purpose, so rare letters get the same practice time as common ones.

  • Alphabet order practice: Draw a letter and name its neighbours. It is harder than reciting the song because you start in the middle.
  • Letter position drills: Ask for the number of the drawn letter. M is 13, and T is 20.
  • Spelling games: Say a word that starts with the letter, then one that ends with it.
  • Sorting tasks: Draw five letters and put them in A-Z order as fast as you can.

How Many Draws Does It Take to See Every Letter?

Since letters can repeat, you will not see all 26 in the first 26 draws. On average it takes about 100 draws before every letter from A to Z has turned up at least once. This is known as the coupon collector problem: the last few letters are slow to appear because most draws land on letters you already have.

The table shows how many different letters you should expect to have seen after a set number of draws.

Capital Letters, Small Letters or Both

The generator below starts in uppercase, which is easiest to read on a board or screen. Switch to lowercase for handwriting and early reading, where children meet small letters far more often. The "Both" option flips a coin for each letter, which is useful for matching games where one child holds B and another holds b.

  • Uppercase suits flashcards, labels and letter calls.
  • Lowercase suits phonics and handwriting practice.
  • Mixed case suits matching pairs and case-sensitive test data.

A-Z Letter Generator Questions

Does the A-Z generator include every letter?

Yes. All 26 letters from A to Z are in the pool unless you type letters into the exclude box.

Are rare letters like Q and Z less likely?

No. Each letter has the same 1-in-26 chance (about 3.85%) on every draw, whether it is common in English or not.

Why did I get the same letter twice in a row?

Each draw is independent, so the same letter comes up twice in a row about 1 time in 26. Turn off "Allow repeated letters" if you need every letter to be different.

How does the alphabet order quiz work?

It draws a random letter and hides the letters just before and after it. Say your answer, then press Reveal to check it and see the letter's position from 1 to 26.

What position is each letter in the alphabet?

A is 1 and Z is 26. Some useful anchors: E is 5, J is 10, O is 15, T is 20 and Y is 25.

Can I draw more than one A-Z letter at once?

Yes. Pick 5, 10 or 20 in the generator, or choose Custom and enter any number up to 100.
