How Alphabet Bingo Differs From Number Bingo
Letter bingo swaps the numbers 1 to 75 for the letters A to Z, which makes games shorter and easier for young players.
A letter bingo card has 25 squares in a 5 by 5 grid, with a free square in the middle. That leaves 24 squares for letters, taken from a pool of 26, so every card leaves out exactly 2 letters. Players can see what is missing, which keeps things simple for children still learning the alphabet.
The caller draws without replacement, just like a bingo ball machine. Once a letter is called it stays out for the rest of the game, and the board shows every letter called so far. That makes it easy to check a winning card.
- Letter recognition: Call the letter by name only, and have players find it on their card.
- Phonics bingo: Call the sound, such as "sss", instead of the letter name S.
- Picture bingo: Call a word like "apple" and have players mark its first letter.
- Lowercase bingo: Call in uppercase and have players find the lowercase letter on a lowercase card.

Winning Patterns and How Many Calls They Need
Because the free square counts as marked, any line through the middle needs only four called letters. The table shows the fewest calls each pattern could possibly take. Real games take longer, since most calls will not be on your card.
| Pattern | Squares to mark | Fewest possible calls |
|---|---|---|
| Middle row or middle column | 4 + free square | 4 |
| Either diagonal | 4 + free square | 4 |
| Any other row or column | 5 | 5 |
| Four corners | 4 | 4 |
| Blackout (whole card) | 24 + free square | 24 |

Why No Two Cards Match
Each card is filled by shuffling the alphabet and placing 24 letters into the grid. There are about 2 × 10²⁶ ways to do that, so two players dealt random cards will have completely different layouts. For a classroom, deal one card per player on a shared screen, or take a screenshot of each card for printing.

Letter Bingo Generator Questions
How many letters are on a letter bingo card?

No. Each letter is called once. After all 26 letters are called, press New game to start again.
How do players mark their card?
Tap a square to mark it and tap it again to clear it. Squares whose letter has been called turn gold, which helps you check a win.
How many letters does a card leave out?
Two. There are 26 letters and 24 squares, so each card is missing two random letters.
What is the quickest possible bingo?
Four calls, using the middle row, middle column, a diagonal or the four corners.
Can I play letter bingo with a whole class?
Yes. Show the caller on a projector and deal one card per student, either on their own devices or printed from screenshots.
